Pioneer plasma 42 inch tv
If Pioneer plasmas still trail Panasonic's, it's not by much. The PDP-4360HD, like most sets I've auditioned, had slight difficulty with some test tracks, exhibiting jagged edges on rapid-motion sequences and failing to properly process a scene originally shot in film - not major concerns in everyday use.

On HD television, it also produced accurate skin tones (Jodie Foster's) in "Flightplan" and you-are-there (almost) sports action. Plasma sets, which are digital devices, love digitally created material like the animated "Robots" - the Pioneer never looked better with such vivid color and great clarity. I also watched high-definition programming via cable box and component-video connections after calibrating the set - adjusting brightness, contrast, sharpness and color - with a test disc. You need surround-sound.įor great pictures, all I needed was an HDMI connection with Toshiba's upconverting SD-4980 DVD player, which digitally manipulates a DVD signal to almost high-definition quality. If you blow your entire home-theater budget on an HDTV, you're not getting the true home-theater experience. But it doesn't come close to an actual surround-sound setup with five speakers and a subwoofer. Pioneer even adds SRS audio processing for broad, faux-surround effects.

Pioneer includes a silver table stand (warning: some assembly required) and detachable speakers for either side of the screen.Īs TV speakers go, these are among the best you'll find. The screen, framed in gleaming black, looks suitable for wall-hanging, too. At only 57 pounds, it's not much of a burden on the wall, either. The set is 42 inches long, 25 high and, in the plasma tradition, only 4 inches deep. Pioneer provides plenty of video connections, among them two HDMI (digital) and three component (analog). (Use it only if other program guides are not available, as when you activate a CableCard the few times I've tried it, I've had a hard time getting it to work with my cable system.) It also has a TV Guide program guide that people with cable or satellite service probably would not use. The receiver includes analog and digital tuners, a CableCard slot for digital cable-ready operation, and two-tuner picture-in-picture.

With so much of the electronics stored in the media receiver, the screen also runs cooler and quieter than most plasmas. Only two wires connect the media receiver to the plasma, creating a much cleaner look - especially if you hang the screen on a wall. This 43-inch set offers an extra inch of screen (though it has the same 1024x768 resolution as a 42-inch set), and it's controlled by a separate media receiver, which can be stored with the rest of your home-theater equipment.Īll that equipment - like a DVD player, cable box or TiVo - plugs into the nearby media receiver.
